News, products, marketing and merchandising tips for the
front end of community pharmacies

Leverage the line

Leverage the pharmacy line

Give patients something productive to do while they wait by placing "How-To" signage near the register and waiting area. You can start with a sign titled "Three steps to treat a bee sting" or "How to treat poison ivy” next to your topical ointments to create natural impulse sales. With longer daylight hours, a sign about preventing and treating sunburn can drive your sunscreen and aloe sales.

bag stuffer

Upgrade your bag stuffers

Instead of just a receipt, tuck a small, brightly colored "Did you know?" card into every pharmacy bag. Use it to highlight a unique service or a new summer product line you've just brought in. Bonus points if you add a handwritten note as another way to brighten your patients' day.

footware

Focus on foot health

Flip-flop season leads to an increase in cracked heels and foot fatigue. Create a "Sandal Ready" shelf with intensive foot creams, pumice stones, and arch supports. Patients are often willing to invest in foot care when they realize their winter boots have been hiding a few issues.

clutter

The zero clutter policy

This is a friendly reminder that your front-end staff should spend ten minutes every morning "facing" the shelves and removing empty cardboard shippers. A crowded, messy shelf makes products look cheap and discourages browsing. Clean lines and organized displays make patients feel more comfortable browsing for products.

Hosting the world

Hosting the world

Cities across the U.S. will be packed with visitors to watch the world's biggest soccer tournament. For pharmacies in those cities and surrounding areas, expect to serve international travelers along with your typical patients. NCPA in partnership with the Kansas Pharmacists Association developed this practical guide to inform you how your pharmacy can prepare for the upcoming soccer championship. It includes a review of OTC medication recommendations, regulations, and game day schedules.
