April 2023 Issue

Upcoming learning hour on May 16 to discuss the "how" of medical at home

Are you caring for complex patients at home who might otherwise be in the nursing home or assisted living facility if it were not for your pharmacy services? You could add, on average, $800 — $1,000 per month in new revenue and avoided DIR fees to your bottom line when you classify even 10 patients as medical at home through your long-term care business. Join NCPA's Long-Term Care Division lead, Bri Morris, and an industry expert guest, Paul Shelton, as they discuss the value proposition of medical at home and how you can diversify your pharmacy revenue. NCPA's LTC Division, other LTC organizations launch Alliance for Long-Term Care Pharmacy @ Home

Over the last several months, NCPA's Long-Term Care Division has worked diligently alongside American Society of Consultant Pharmacists and the Senior Care Pharmacy Coalition behind the scenes to form a new industry-wide coalition to advocate for our No. 1 priority, recognition and payment for medical-at-home services. The Alliance for Long-Term Care Pharmacy @ Home, which launched April 5, strives to provide standardization and quantify the impact of LTC pharmacy services provided in the home setting.

NCPA submits comments to CMS on Medicare Drug Price Negotiation Program, shares concerns regarding LTC pharmacy

NCPA submitted comments to CMS on the Medicare Drug Price Negotiation Program as part of the Inflation Reduction Act. NCPA requested that CMS provide a financially viable model of pharmacy reimbursement, including but not limited to a maximum fair price (MFP) that accounts for margin on the ingredient cost of the drug plus a required and economically viable professional dispensing fee. We also asked CMS to ensure that supply chain entities cannot impose terms on pharmacy, including but not limited to pharmacy DIR fees on MFP drugs.

Additionally, NCPA expressed concerns that LTC pharmacies will be disproportionately affected by this guidance, given LTC pharmacy's higher dispensing costs compared to those in the retail setting. NCPA staff and members met with CMS staff on April 13 to discuss our comments, and NCPA will have a follow up meeting with the agency. Stay tuned for further developments.
