News, products, marketing and merchandising tips for the
front end of community pharmacies

OTCs: 4 x 4 x 4

To the few of you out there that are still stocking one each of OTC products, I need you to try one thing for four months. Maintain the inventory of four each of the ten best-selling items in each of these four categories: cold &allergy, pain relief, digestive health, and vitamins. Ask your wholesaler to send you the list of the best sellers ranked by unit sales for each department. For each of the brand items on the best sellers list add at least two each of your private label comparator product.

Highlight Skincare

July is UV Safety Awareness Month. Help customers find skincare products that offer UVA and UVB protection by placing a stripe on a shelf tag with a bright yellow highlighter in front of each of the items. Post a few signs that read: "We've made protecting your skin easier! Look for the YELLOW stripe on the shelf tag! Items with yellow stripe contain SPF protection." See an example here.

CreaTICK Display

Stock it as if you know it's going to sell! You need to see what merchandising wizard, Jonathan Oliver – 2019 NICE Award Winner, has done with Tick repellents and Tick removers. I'm not sure how one person can think of so many creative displays. He is good, really good. See just how good here.

Bugs, Bites and Burns – Goodbye!

If you haven't done it already, you are late to the party. But if you act today, you're still going to see additional sales. Create an endcap with a sign that reads "Bugs, Bites and Burns Relief Center." On the endcap, you will want bug repellent, sunblock, sunburn remedies, lip balms, and itch relief. Make sure to offer all-natural remedies; start with aloe. Add a smaller second sign that reminds customers to drink more water. Send me a photo of your signs. I would love to see them.

Don't break your back

Cleaning shelves is a laborious task, needing to shuffle product from side to side to clean, or worse yet, set the items on the floor. It's backbreaking and frustrating. Help make your life and cleaning your shelves easier by investing in an Industrial Strength Plastic Two Shelf Tray Service & Utility Cart, that has rubber casters. Place the product from the shelf that you are cleaning on the top of the cart and your cleaning materials on the bottom of the cart. Remember, always start cleaning from the top shelf and work your way down.

Update from June 22nd Profit Makers:

When moving fixtures, my friend Dave Gaudette, Retail Service Manager for Smith Drug uses furniture slides purchased from local hardware stores to move fixtures on carpet.
