News, products, marketing and merchandising tips for the
front end of community pharmacies

Fix(ture)ing to move

In 44 years, I have never completed a remodel project without having to move a fixture. The positive effect of adjusting a fixture to create a comfortable shopping experience is well worth the time and effort. Your goal should be to have your gondolas positioned five feet apart from each other, creating a 5 ft aisle. You want a fixture at least 8 ft from the front door and 6 to 8 ft from the pharmacy bench. Moving a fixture is not as difficult as it appears to be. Click here for my tip list on moving fixtures.

Hint: you will need some cardboard.

SPF and so much more

The month of July is the time when merchandisers update the skincare section. To increase companion and impulse sales in this department create room for natural products and a yearly home for sun care items. Also, cross-merchandise Vitamin C, B complex, Vitamin D, Evening Primrose, collagen supplements and toe fungus remedies. You can add Korean Skincare and other natural products by going to Front-End Marketplace Natural Products. The product lines mentioned above make a compelling end-cap.

Change is good

When I suggest a much-needed remodel, I will often hear a chorus of "Our customers hate it when we move things around!" I don't disagree, but I do know that customers love an up-to-date store that is always looking alive and well. Think about a remodel project as an improvement project. Start with a small project – take the product of a spinner or floor display that is crowding an aisle and merchandise the items on an end-cap. If the display has a header card on it, then transfer it too. Recycle the floor display or spinner.

Keep your shades stocked

Soon, if not now, your sunglass assortment will be picked over. The only way that you can boost the sales of the slower moving styles is to fill your display!

Nobody wants to shop from a picked over rack.

Mirror Mirror

Ever hear your customer ask, "How do I look in these glasses?" When it comes to sun and reading glasses, we all have to remember that glasses are also a fashion statement. Increase sales by having mirrors readily available near or on the display racks.

Tip: If you have glasses that have been hanging around for over a year, take them off the rack and sell them at a discount for Halloween.
