News, products, marketing and merchandising tips for the
front end of community pharmacies

* TIPS from NCPA's Front-End Guru, Gabe Trahan *

Father's Day Sales Worksheet

The most successful merchandisers take the best notes—before, during, AND after the holiday. Start jotting down your sales and inventory hits & misses in my new Father's Day Sales Worksheet. Be sure to mark progress after the holiday on June 19, too.

Father's Day Gift Ideas That Just Might Surprise You

As a community pharmacy and wellness center, promote Dad's health for Father's Day this year. For Dad's heart, think about promoting vitamins & nutrition such as CoQ10, Omega 3s, and B-Complex vitamins. For Dad's feet, highlight fashionable orthopedic sandals or shoes. Dad will certainly need sunscreen and perhaps a nice men's skin cream by Nivea. If you sell lift chairs, each chair should have a Father's Day gift sign on it: "Give Dad his new favorite chair!"

Take a Few Minutes to Guarantee a Great Shopping Experience for Your Customers

You and your pharmacy team are the only thing you have that can't be found in any other store. Take a few minutes today to meet with any summer help you may have brought in to handle vacations, seasonal spikes in customer traffic, or to get caught up on front-end projects. Ask them to walk around and get familiar with every inch of the store. Make it clear what the dress code and cellphone policy is and how to count change back to a customer. Require that all customers be greeted and thanked for coming into the store. Impress on the employee how crucial it is to be on time for work. Most importantly, insist that they offer the same high level of customer service for which the rest of the staff is known. One bad experience from an untrained, uninformed employee can chase a customer away in a New York minute. Have a one-on-one meeting with all of your summer help today.

11 Summer Messaging Ideas for Your Outdoor Digital Sign

It's important to change the messages on your outdoor digital signs regularly as well as include the time and temperature to train your customers to look at your sign. Here are 11 ideas for summertime (many also make great end-caps!):

  1. "Give Dad the gift of heart health. Ask us how."

  2. "Your summer travel headquarters."

  3. "Save a trip—road snacks here"

  4. "We have your summer skin care solutions."

  5. "Expired sunblock? Come in for a new one."

  6. "Bug bites? Sunburn? Poison ivy? We can help."

  7. "Ask us how to sync your meds to one trip."

  8. "Headache? We have relief." (FYI: June is Migraine and Headache Awareness Month)

  9. "We deliver to your home...for free!"

  10. "It's raining! Use our drive-thru."

  11. "Medication taste yucky? We can fix that."

Boost Patient Interactions & Revenue with Independent Only Products

NCPA members have new access to a special membership discount on unique health care products available only through independent pharmacies. In a collaboration with Union Springs Healthcare (USH) announced last month, NCPA brings independent community pharmacy owners and staff the Companion Care Counseling© (CCC) Program developed by USH. CCC helps facilitate more productive pharmacist-patient interactions to address common health problems or side effects from existing prescription medications. This program and accompanying resources provided by USH have already been successful in hundreds of independent pharmacies at improving patient outcomes and growing pharmacy revenue. NCPA members can learn more about the program, the products, and claim their special member prices at www.ushcare.com/pharmacy-partner.
