News, products, marketing and merchandising tips for the
front end of community pharmacies

* TIPS from NCPA's Front-End Guru, Gabe Trahan *

New Front-End Products Added to Marketplace—Stand Out from the Competition

One website is all you need to find unique and distinctive front-end products to sell at your pharmacy. NCPA's website frontendmarketplace.com is your front-end connection to products that help you stand out from the competition. From skin care to pet care to snacks and more, you will find the kind of niche products that your customers are looking for and most of which you cannot find through your drug wholesaler. New products from Zollipops and Truth Bar just added!

Bye Bye Bugs End-Cap

Worries about mosquito-borne viruses like Zika and West Nile continue to increase, and consumers are already seeking protection. The time is NOW to prepare your counter and/or end-cap with insect repellent and itch-relief solutions. Offer a variety of products, including all-natural repellents (looking for one to stock? Healing Tree manufactures an all-natural repellent spray—find it on frontendmarketplace.com). Inventory enough insect repellent to last you at least three months. The bigger the display, the greater the sales. If you have the space and inventory, create an end-cap in a prominent location and set it up at least one week before the Memorial Day holiday weekend. Consider adding tick repellent and fine-tipped tweezers (May is Lyme Disease Awareness Month). Add a sign! Bonus: Add bug bite prevention tips to your social media accounts and website; the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has a helpful bug bite prevention webpage.

Memorial Day Weekend Reminders

Hang a sign stating your Memorial Day weekend store hours on your entrance door, Rx drop-off and pick-up counters, and your checkout counters; update your social media accounts and website with your holiday hours as well. Attract holiday travelers with an end-cap or display of sun protection products and travel-size items. Add a message to your exterior signage: "Save a Trip—Road Snacks Here!" (P.S.—PopCorners make great road trip snacks. Find them at frontendmarketplace.com.)

Mother's Day Greeting Card Sales Are Evolving

It is important to do your homework after every major selling holiday, like Mother's Day. Take notes about which items sold well in your store last week and which ones did not (greeting cards, gifts, chocolates, etc.). Even though Mother's Day is the third best-selling holiday for greeting cards, the market is evolving, and selling the same old cards isn't going to cut it anymore. The content in last year's One-Pager Tip is still relevant and will walk you through the steps you and your staff should be taking this week to ensure you order the right type of greeting cards and the right amount of cards for next year.

Restock Your Card Racks

By now, Mother's Day greeting cards should be removed from racks and Father's Day cards should be out. Be sure you have some graduation cards on hand. Fill any holes in your greeting card racks with boxed chocolates, photo frames, party napkins, or gift bags. Tip: Dads like chocolates, too!
