News, products, marketing and merchandising tips for the
front end of community pharmacies

* TIPS From NCPA's Front-End Guru, Gabe Trahan *

Give Me Five

Fives are wild in this week's Profit Makers. Can you do all five?

Five Best Sellers
Today, mark the shelf label of the five best selling items in your cough & cold department. Maintain no less than 5 of each of the five items. If any of the 5 are brand items, then double face your private label comparison product to the right of the brand name. Keep this up for at least five months, (equal to a cough and cold season.)

Five Recommendations
Identify the 5 top items in your OTC section that your find your pharmacy team is recommending to your customers. The items do not have to be in the same category. Place a business size card sign in front of each item. Here are a few examples of messaging for the signs. "Recommended by our pharmacy team" "Recommended by our pharmacist" "This item recommended by our wellness team"

Five Comparisons
Add five private label "compare to" signs to five top-selling private label items. Make sure to mention on the sign if there is a 100% guarantee.

Five Impulses
Take the same five items you have identified from the above tip #3 and cross merchandise them by double facing the items on a shelf behind either the drop-off or pick up counter. Add a large sign that reads "Our Pharmacist Recommends."

Five Signs
Post 5 signs that promote five different recommended vitamins throughout your front end. Place the signs anywhere but your vitamin section! Example: In the haircare section a sign promoting a vitamin for hair and nail care, biotin or better yet Elon Hair and Nail products, see Front-end Marketplace. More sign ideas:

Shaving section – Looking for more energy? Ask us if our B12 is right for you.

Cough and cold department – Sick of being sick? Ask us if our immune booster is right for you.

Pain relief category – Wish you could sleep better? Ask us about melatonin.

And in any department: Looking for a great multi-vitamin, ask our pharmacist what they recommend!

Bonus:
On your planner or calendar, on the 5th of each month make a note to visit frontendmarketplace.com for new and unique items to add to your product mix. Along with creating additional sales, unique items boost your image as a destination store where new and exciting items are found.

It's quick and easy to nominate your store for a NICE Award!

It doesn't take long to submit a nomination for the 2019 NICE Awards. Which of these categories is the one for something special you've done this year?

  • Best External Remodel - From landscaping and paint jobs to entire rebuilds, how did you improve your curb appeal?

  • Best Internal Remodel - Maybe you moved the pharmacy department. Maybe you created a compression section. Whatever your remodel project, how did it enhance your image and sales?

  • Best In-Store Display - When done right, end-caps are the 2nd best section for creating impulse sales. Show us the display your customers couldn’t resist.

  • Best Exterior Sign - Roadside signs draw attention to your store. Have a new one you're proud of? Enter it to see if it's the best of the best.

  • Best Delivery Vehicle - Are you riding in style? Toot your own horn and show off your delivery vehicle.

  • Best Marketing/Promotion - How did you attract new customers in your community? Tell us about the great promotion you ran that you want to tell everyone else about.

  • Best Customer Convenience Improvement - Americans love convenience. We take hard processes and make them simpler, such as curbside delivery, drive-up windows and automatic doors for patients who have trouble walking into the pharmacy. Do you have a great example of how you've made life easier for your customers?

Nominate your store this year before December 1st... winners will be featured in the March 2019 America's Pharmacist magazine... click here to get the details!
