June 2022 Issue

At-home care saves money for the health care system, CMS says

CMS published a fact sheet outlining recent results from its ongoing Independence at Home Demonstration Project. The report found that the expenditures for beneficiaries of IAH participants were approximately 18 percent, or $42.3 million, below targeted spending in 2020, an average reduction of $6,585 per beneficiary. All 10 IAH participants (nine practices and one consortium) reduced the per-beneficiary-per-month expenditures relative to the practice's spending target.

The IAH demonstration tests a payment incentive and service delivery model for home-based primary care for Medicare fee-for-service beneficiaries with multiple chronic illnesses. These recent results from the IAH demonstration project are promising and helpful as the NCPA LTC Division continues to advocate for recognition and payment for medical-at-home services.

NCPA's LTC Division supports consultant pharmacists in proposed rule comments

In comments to CMS on the proposed rule for skilled nursing facilities, NCPA's LTC Division emphasized the value of consultant pharmacists in that setting. We also supported the reporting of influenza vaccination of staff as long as it is not overly burdensome. Lastly, NCPA's LTC Division supports the efforts of Project PAUSE, a coalition of interested stakeholders led by the American Society of Consultant Pharmacists and the Alliance for Aging Research that seeks to update a metric for the prescribing of psychoactive drugs for patients.
